1959 Katharine Lane Weems God Made the Beast Medal Society of Medalists 60 Bronze

Available

Katharine Lane Weems' God Made the Beast, the sixtieth issue of the Society of Medalists, 1959.

One face is a puma coming down a fallen trunk, all shoulder and tail, under GOD with rays breaking above it. The other is three geese in flight through cloud, wings at three different points of the stroke. The legend runs across both faces and only completes when you turn the medal over. Weems was the animal sculptor of her generation in America, trained under Anna Hyatt Huntington and Charles Grafly, and best known for the dolphins and rhinoceroses at Harvard's Biological Laboratories. Animals in motion were the whole of her subject, and a two-sided medal gave her the rare chance to put a cat and a bird on one object without either one losing the frame. 749 were struck, at 73 mm. The edge reads THE SOCIETY OF MEDALISTS 60TH ISSUE - NOVEMBER 1959 KATHARINE LANE WEEMS SC. The original box and brochure are both still with it.
