1958 Charles Rudy Pippa's Song Medal Society of Medalists 57 Bronze

$119

Available

Charles Rudy's Pippa's Song, the fifty-seventh issue of the Society of Medalists, 1958.

The medal takes Browning's lines and gives each face one of them. THE YEAR'S AT THE SPRING shows a farm worker walking out with a seed bag and a spade behind him. AND DAY'S AT THE MORN shows a woman feeding a goose at first light. Read the two faces in order and you have the opening of the song, in the plainest possible images. Rudy was a Pennsylvania sculptor who worked in stone and terra cotta on public buildings through the 1930s and 1940s, and his figures keep that architectural weight even at medal scale. The issue ran to 650 pieces across all four of its varieties. This one still has its original Society of Medalists box and the brochure that was mailed out with it.
