Calvin Coolidge Signed Massachusetts Commission Portion with State Seal

The lower portion of a Commonwealth of Massachusetts commission, cut from the body of the document and keeping both the embossed state seal and the signature. Coolidge signed it in brown ink over the engraved line "Governor and Commander in Chief" - that is, as Governor of Massachusetts, an office he held from January 1919 to January 1921, and not as President. The heavy gold-foil seal at the left is embossed COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS around the state arms. The engrossing clerk filled the date blanks "twenty-fifth day of" - the month runs off the cut edge - and "nine hundred twenty". The Albert P. Langtry cut listed separately in this group is the Secretary of the Commonwealth's half of the same printed form, and its own date line survives intact as the one hundred forty-fourth year of Independence, which fixes that year as 1920. The clerk's ink and the signature ink are the same brown, which is usual on commissions signed in batches at the State House. The signature runs about 3 5/8 inches. The cut measures 6 7/8 by 5 7/8 inches. Not submitted to a third-party authentication service. Condition: please see the photographs.
