1892 Grover Cleveland Campaign Medal DeWitt GC 1892-8

An 1892 campaign piece for Grover Cleveland, cataloged as DeWitt GC 1892-8 and known as the Party of the People type for the legend it carries. The DeWitt numbers are those of J. Doyle DeWitt's A Century of Campaign Buttons, 1789-1889, the 1959 catalog that first organized this material into a usable system, revised and enlarged by Edmund B. Sullivan in 1981 as American Political Badges and Medalets, 1789-1892. A campaign design was routinely struck in several metals off one pair of dies, so a single number can cover white metal, brass, copper, aluminum and plated strikings that are far from equally common. Cleveland's 1892 win returned him to an office he had left four years earlier, the only man in the nineteenth century to manage it. He ran with Adlai E. Stevenson of Illinois and beat Benjamin Harrison 277 electoral votes to 145. Uncirculated, with a prooflike reverse. Offered raw, without certification.
