1892 Grover Cleveland Campaign Medal DeWitt GC 1892-17 Brass

An 1892 campaign medalet for Grover Cleveland, struck in brass and cataloged as DeWitt GC 1892-17. Brass strikings hold their detail and survive handling better than white metal, which is why so many of the pieces made to be pinned, looped or hung were made in it. Cleveland spent four years out of office practicing law in New York and came back in 1892 to beat Benjamin Harrison, the man who had taken the job from him. With Adlai E. Stevenson of Illinois on the ticket he carried 277 electoral votes to Harrison's 145, while James B. Weaver and the Populists took 22 and signaled the fight that was coming in 1896. Ex J. DeWitt built the reference collection of American political material, some seventy thousand pieces, while rising from claims investigator to president of the Travelers Insurance Company, and his 1959 catalog A Century of Campaign Buttons is the source of the numbering used here.
