1892 Grover Cleveland Campaign Medal DeWitt GC 1892-13 Copper

Available

1892 Grover Cleveland campaign medal in copper, DeWitt GC 1892-13.

An 1892 campaign medalet for Grover Cleveland, struck in copper at 28.5 mm, cataloged as DeWitt GC 1892-13. Copper is the collector's metal in this series. It was struck in smaller numbers than white metal, it tones rather than dulls, and it shows a strike more honestly than any of the plated finishes. The 1892 race was a rematch, and a quieter one than 1884 or 1888. Harrison's wife was dying through the fall and both men largely stayed off the stump. Cleveland won it comfortably and became the first man to take back the presidency after losing it. Ex J. Doyle DeWitt. DeWitt built the reference collection of American political material, some seventy thousand pieces, while rising from claims investigator to president of the Travelers Insurance Company, and his 1959 catalog A Century of Campaign Buttons is the source of the numbering used here. Edmund B. Sullivan revised and enlarged it in 1981. Graded Mint State in hand. Offered raw, without certification.
