1892 Grover Cleveland Campaign Medal DeWitt GC 1892-11 Copper
Available
1892 Grover Cleveland campaign medal in copper, DeWitt GC 1892-11, with Frances Folsom Cleveland sharing the obverse.
An 1892 campaign medalet for Grover Cleveland, struck in copper and cataloged as DeWitt GC 1892-11. The obverse pairs Frances Folsom Cleveland with her husband under the legend HONORABLE & MRS. GROVER CLEVELAND. The reverse reads IN HONOR, DEDICATED BY FAITHFUL FRIENDS, 1892, inside a laurel wreath.
Frances Folsom was twenty-one when she married Cleveland in the White House in 1886, the youngest first lady the country has had. Her likeness proved popular enough that advertisers printed it on their products without asking, and a bill was introduced in Congress to stop them. By 1892 the campaign was using her deliberately, which is why she shares this obverse rather than the running mate.
1892 was the last of Cleveland's three consecutive runs for the presidency, and the one that made him the first president to serve two terms that were not consecutive.
Ex J. Doyle DeWitt. DeWitt built the reference collection of American political material, some seventy thousand pieces, while rising from claims investigator to president of the Travelers Insurance Company, and his 1959 catalog A Century of Campaign Buttons is the source of the numbering used here. Edmund B. Sullivan revised and enlarged it in 1981.
