1892 Grover Cleveland and Stevenson Tammany Hall Campaign Button DeWitt GC 1892-40 Celluloid

An 1892 Democratic campaign button for Grover Cleveland and Adlai E. Stevenson, celluloid on tin at about 19 mm, cataloged as DeWitt GC 1892-40. TAMMANY HALL over C AND S sits on a red, white and blue shield. The reverse is marked THOS. JAY GLEASON, 112 LIBERTY ST. N.Y. The organization named on the front had spent 1884 and 1888 working against Cleveland, who built his reputation on refusing to deal with it. By 1892 Tammany was printing his initials on its own buttons. He won that November and became the only president to serve two terms that were not consecutive. Celluloid over a paper insert on a tin back is the construction that took over political buttons in the 1890s and stayed for a century.
