1892 Campaign Medal Uniface White Metal DeWitt Unlisted

Available

1892 uniface campaign medal in white metal, unlisted in DeWitt.

An 1892 campaign piece struck in white metal, uniface, and unlisted in DeWitt. Uniface means blank on the reverse. Pieces like this are usually shells: thin, one sided strikings made to be paired back to back into a two sided badge, or mounted onto a card or a pin back. Singles come down to us when a pair was split or when a shell never went into the assembly it was made for, and they are collected in their own right. 1892 was Cleveland's third consecutive run and his second win, taking the presidency back from Benjamin Harrison with Adlai E. Stevenson on the ticket. It was also near the end of the medalet era: within a few years the celluloid pinback button had taken over the campaign trade almost entirely. Ex J. Doyle DeWitt, and unnumbered in his own catalog. That is worth noting rather than discounting. DeWitt handled more of this material than anyone before or since, and a piece he kept without giving it a number is a piece he thought worth keeping. Graded Mint State in hand. Offered raw, without certification.
