1888 Grover Cleveland and Thurman Enameled Shield Campaign Pin DeWitt GC 1888-83 Brass

An 1888 Democratic campaign pin for Grover Cleveland and Allen G. Thurman, brass with enamel in the form of a shield, about 28 mm high, cataloged as DeWitt GC 1888-83. Four stars on a red enamel field above, a white band carrying C AND T through the center, nine stars on blue below. Thirteen stars in all, which is the arithmetic the design is built on. The Cleveland and Thurman ticket lost that November. Enameled shield work of this quality is the top of the 1888 jewelry field, and the condition question with all of it is the enamel and the pin on the reverse.
