1884 James G. Blaine Campaign Medal DeWitt JGB 1884-23 Silver

An 1884 campaign medalet for James G. Blaine and John A. Logan, struck in silver at about 19 mm, cataloged as DeWitt JGB 1884-23. Silver was never a campaign metal. The whole economics of the trade ran on cheap alloys handed out by the thousand, so a silver striking was made for a handful of people connected to the campaign rather than for the crowd. The mintage reported for this number is ten. Very few certified examples of the variety are recorded. Small, plain, and scarce is a difficult combination to find in political material, because the pieces that survive in quantity are the ones nobody wanted to wear out.
