Sold
Copper medal dated 1778, struck in the 1860s, certified PCGS MS67RB.
A copper medal dated 1778 and struck in the 1860s, filed by PCGS among the colonial restrikes and fantasies.
The obverse shows a draped and armored bust facing right with the legend NON DEPENDENS STATUS, a state not dependent. The reverse seats a figure of America holding arrows and resting against a shield, AMERICA divided across the field and the date 1778 in the exergue.
Restrikes and fantasies are the class of pieces made in the nineteenth century for collectors who could not buy the originals. This one comes from the same decade and the same market that produced Alfred Robinson's copper copy of the Brasher doubloon, also in this catalog.
Certified PCGS MS67RB, a superb gem holding its original red and brown color.
