1884 James G. Blaine Plumed Knight Clothing Button DeWitt JGB 1884-42 Brass
$125
Available1884 Blaine Plumed Knight clothing button, brass on tin with the original shank, DeWitt JGB 1884-42.
An 1884 campaign clothing button for James G. Blaine, brass on tin at about 23 mm, cataloged as DeWitt JGB 1884-42.
PLUMED KNIGHT runs around a spray of plumes. The nickname came from Robert G. Ingersoll's nominating speech at the 1876 convention, which cast Blaine as a knight throwing his lance against the enemies of his country, and it stuck to him for the rest of his life. By 1884 the campaign did not need to print his name.
The reverse keeps its original shank, so the piece is intact as made: a button that was sewn onto a coat, not a souvenir struck to be put in a drawer.
